SCOPE OF PRACTICE
Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS) is a professional in the field of breastfeeding and lactation who has undergone specific training and education in the area, as well as training to support families during pregnancy, the initiation of breastfeeding, and the normal course of lactation.
A Certified Breastfeeding Specialist has completed a minimum of 45 hours of didactic lactation education program that is recognized by LEAARC, offered by LER, and passes a final exam demonstrating that they have acquired the necessary knowledge of basic lactation support, after which they qualify as a professional authorized to perform all duties in accordance with their scope of work.
Support for the autonomy of the mother/person in the lactation phase:
• by respecting the confidentiality of information and the privacy of the individual;
• respecting the client’s right to choose according to their situation;
• supporting parents in identifying and achieving their goals related to lactation and breastfeeding;
• respecting the principles of shared decision-making.
Education of families:
• education and support for families during pregnancy and the perinatal period, continuing until the weaning of the baby/child;
• group education through courses, education via individual counseling, as well as in breastfeeding support groups.
Support for the families:
• assessment of the mother/parent and baby, and development of an individualized care plan in medically uncomplicated situations;
• support and work with families in finding optimal breastfeeding positions, latch techniques, feeding frequency and duration, as well as diaper output parameters;
• assessment of breastfeeding effectiveness and milk transfer in medically uncomplicated situations;

• providing solutions that do not have negative outcomes;
• providing guidance to parents of preterm infants on establishing and maintaining lactation;
• counseling breastfeeding mothers/parents who are returning to work on choosing a breast pump, maintaining lactation, and storing breast milk;
• documenting the outcomes of work with families.
Collaboration with other professionals:
• when necessary – referring the family to an appropriate facility for further assessment;
• collaboration with other professionals – IBCLCs, doctors, or others – for assessment and treatment purposes;
• working as part of a team to help remove barriers to successful breastfeeding establishment.
Represents the voice of the family:
• in promoting human milk for human babies;
• assists in the development of programs to support families in breastfeeding;
• addresses and advocates for aspects of breastfeeding management programs that support successful breastfeeding;
• advocates for the rights of families within the healthcare system;
• adhers to the provisions of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes.
The certificate is valid for 5 years, after which recertification is required.
